Hello world

Things to come after things have changed.
Hello world

With great joy and acceptance of who I have become, I have decided to resume posting. I missed you!

It has been about five years since I last existed on this newsletter; now that I have re-emerged, here’s what you can expect from me:

Thanks for reading online roleplay! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

  • Announcements about articles, book reviews, and column contributions. I wrote a book review of Journalism History and Digital Archives for the upcoming issue of The American Archivist. In spring 2025, my peer-reviewed article, “Against AI: Critical Refusal in the Library and Archive,” will be published in the journal Library Trends. In winter 2025, I will be contributing a column for Information Technology and Libraries that will explore critical librarianship as it relates to the discussion and utilization of technology.

    • In 2022, Akriti Rastogi and I published an article in Fast Capitalism, “Deep-Rooted Images: Situating (Extra) Institutional Appropriations of Deepfakes in the US and India.”

  • Essays and reflections on critical media/cultural studies, digital archives, critical librarianship, and digital/technology studies.

  • My radio show, Trystine, was previously aired on the now-shuttered Beloved Radio (RIP). Trystine takes the listener through a journey of search, discovery, and recognition. Imagined as transmissions of and for self-reflection, the goal of the show is to enable artists to excavate their current sense of style or genre and shape a sonic journey alternative to what they may typically perform or release. I am relaunching Trystine as a quarterly mix series, and the series’ first contribution will be from Plight Jada. I’ll be posting the more recent transmissions on the show’s Soundcloud page, but for now, you can listen to the broadcasts archived on Mixcloud:

Some major life events have also occurred—I am days away from being conferred as a Master of Science in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I completed my Master of Arts in Communication from the University of Illinois Chicago. In between pursuing these degrees, I switched gears from the PhD-track and began working in public libraries. In 2022, I was a guest on the immaculate podcast librarypunk and talked about my very fresh, very new experience being a library worker.

Fast forward a bit, and I was named an American Library Association Emerging Leader this year. As a member of the Society of American Archivists, I’m the Vice Chair of the Students and New Professionals (SNAP) section, as well as the bloggERS Communications Liaison for the Electronic Records Section.

On the topic of re-emergence, I finally began DJing again. I played sets at Smartbar, Podlasie Club, Smoke & Mirrors, Empty Bottle, and the California Clipper.

Well, that’s enough for now. I’m doing a lot, but happy to be alive to do it. I’m active on Bluesky (@kslater.bsky.social) and decently available on Instagram (@kailyn00011)—but this is the space to watch.
